Hooded Merganser

The Male Hooded Merganser has a large thick crest but it is most often held down and back, however in this image it is held erect. Not the striking white flashes on the breast and head.
Adult Male Winter
General distribution:
Breeds in North America, a rare vagrant in the UK and Europe. Some recorded birds are thought to be escapees but many are also considered genuine vagrants.

Notes:
The Hooded Merganser is one of the smaller Mergansers, not much bigger than a Smew.
Habitat:
Prefers small ponds and rivers and uses holes in trees as nest sites. Can turn up on almost any freshwater as a vagrant in the UK and occasionally in salt water bays and estuaries.

White flash on head with yellow eye

The Female Hooded Merganser constantly moves it's crest around depending upon it's activities. The profile of the bird is very distinctive, even at a distance.

The Male Hooded Merganser has a Black head with a large crest, mostly held down. The sides of it's head have a White flash behind a bright Yellow eye. The breast is White with vertical Black bands up either side and it's flanks are a light Rufous-ochre colour.

The Female Hooded Merganser has a large rust-Brown crest which it frequently moves up and down. It's flanks are Grey-brown and it's back is Black with White edged tertial feathers.
